Common Signs of RV Roof Damage in DFW, Texas

August 13, 2018

Texas is prone to some extreme weather throughout the year. Crazy heat, wind, hail, you name it, impact the safety and life of your RVs roof. Water is one of the biggest culprits behind the common signs of RV roof damage in DFW, Texas. If there is even the tiniest way for water to get into your RV, it will find a way. Regular wear and tear on your RV is also a way to increase the damage done to your roof.

The best thing you can do to prevent water damage or any other types of damage to your roof is to inspect regularly. Below are some ways to identify common signs of RV roof damage to keep things from getting worse.

Common Signs of RV Roof Damage

RV roof damage can take many different forms. It doesn’t matter if you’re a full-time RVer or go out once every season, your RVs roof can be damaged no matter where you go. Some common signs of RV Roof Damage to look out for include:

  • Sagging
  • Leaking
  • Cracks
  • Delamination
  • Rust
  • Aging
  • Dents
  • Scratches

Some of the RV roof damage such as sagging, leaking, and rust can be the result of water damage. Water can easily get into your RV and cause a lot of problems in a short amount of time.

To Check for Water Damage:

This type of RV roof damage can cause thousands of dollars in repairs. While some think this type of damage is easily repaired with some sealants and quick fixes, water can seep in unnoticed places. If there is a crack in your roof, water can get into space between your roof and ceiling, drip down the walls, and even get into electrical outlets. Here are some ways to inspect your RV roof damage:

  • Start with the roof – Check all the seams, flashing, and protruding areas near windows, skylights, air conditioners, and antennae. You may find cracked or damaged sealants or caulking.
  • Inspect Your Walls – Press alongside your interior and exterior RV walls to look for soft spots and wrinkles. You will also want to check for discoloration. These issues are more prominent around windows, slid-outs, and vents.
  • Check the Cabinets – Not many RV owners think to look in their cabinets for water damage. But you should always check the ceilings of the cabinets where the tops meet the roof for discoloration or water stains.

Common Signs Continued

As we mentioned earlier, other common signs of RV roof damage include cracks, delamination, scratches, and dents. Very often, these types of damage are caused by things out of our control. Simply driving down the highway and where we park our RVs open up a world of possible accidents.

Hail storms are notorious for causing annoying dents in the roof of RVs. There are also branches and limbs from trees at campgrounds that fall on top of the roof while parked. Intense heat and rays from the sun increase the likelihood of delamination of the gel coat and paint job on your RV. There are ways to help prevent these damages, however.

Try investing in covers or storage parks for your RV during your traveling downtime. While these can add some expenses to your budget, they provide extra layers of protection against the natural environment.
