How To Add Another A/C Unit To My Sprinter Van in DFW, Texas

How To Add Another A/C Unit To My Sprinter Van in DFW, Texas

Regardless of the time of the year, an A/C unit is an incredibly important part of your driving experience. However, Sprinter Vans are notorious for issues with A/C. In places like DFW, you know what it can feel like while driving around without air conditioning– and it’s not fun.

Unfortunately, Sprinter Van A/C units aren’t designed with the Texas environment in mind. So, if you’re thinking about adding another A/C unit to your Sprinter Van, we think it’s a great idea. At The Sprinter Center, we’d love to help you know and understand how you can install another A/C unit in your van. In fact, A/C upgrades and installations are things we do on a regular basis.

The First Step In How It’s Done: How To Add Another A/C Unit To My Sprinter Van In DFW, Texas

First and foremost, you need to find the right location on your Sprinter’s roof. To do this, you’ll need to climb up on top. But remember you need to be careful when doing this. In most instances, you can choose any clear area with enough space around it for the A/C unit. However, you can also change any existing vents there may be up there, also.

If you decide to change out an old vent, then you need to completely remove it and any sealers on top of screws on the roof. You don’t want to use anything crazy sharp to do this, so use a putty knife as needed. As for any holes you see after the old vent is removed, seal them up.

After you’ve stripped and sealed the old vent off, you can then put in the new A/C unit. It can be difficult to do on your own and may require more than one person (or a few professionals) since they’re pretty heavy and need special equipment. The more people who work on placing the A/C unit in, the better. You don’t want to damage the roof or the unit, so more hands are always great. However, before you lift it in, be sure to thoroughly clean the shroud.

When installing the unit, bolt and duct kits are very helpful. They keep the A/C unit clamped to the roof of the Sprinter Van. Ultimately, depending on the size of your Sprinter, you may need less or more.

The Second Step In Checking What You’ve Done: How To Add Another A/C Unit To My Sprinter Van In DFW, Texas

Before any installation, you should obviously look at the type of A/C unit you want to put in. If you already have a ducted A/C unit, then get the same type again. However, this is true for non-ducted units, also. Because a ducted A/C unit is wired into the Sprinter Van, it’s connected to a thermostat and needs slightly different installation. In contrast, a non-ducted A/C unit can be used with a remote control. So, even though the installation process is pretty similar, keeping track of wires can cause unnecessary damage.

Once you’ve installed the A/C unit, you should spray it with a water hose. This will let you know if there are any areas for water to leak into your van. After that, run power to the A/C unit. In many cases, your A/C unit will come with a junction box. Next, all you need to do is get your Sprinter Van running and your A/C should work in no time.

Whether it’s ducted or non-ducted, the installation process is relatively the same. However, an A/C unit for a Sprinter Van can cost you anywhere between $300 – $1,000; which doesn’t include the tools and potential features you may have to get as well.

Overall, the installation process is pretty risky if you aren’t a professional. It’s challenging to do, so don’t risk damaging your Sprinter Van or A/C unit by installing it yourself.
