How To Repair Your Sprinter Van’s Leaking A/C Unit in Dallas, Texas

September 18, 2018

Whether you have your own personal Sprinter van or a Fleet-vehicle for your business, problems are bound to happen at some point. And while Sprinter vans are excellent vehicles for lugging around cargo, camping, and other things, they’re not above having issues of their own.

When it comes to Sprinter Vans, a pretty common issue we see is a leaking A/C unit. It may not seem like a huge deal, but a leaking A/C unit can do quite a bit of damage. It’s not uncommon for condensation to happen during the hotter months; however, when you start to see water dripping in the interior of your Sprinter, it’s a sign of major potential problems.

Not to fear, though. It can be fixed and you can definitely stop the damage before it gets worse. However, it’s often best to leave it to the professionals here at The Sprinter Center.

How To Repair Your Sprinter Van’s Leaking A/C Unit in Dallas, Texas

Sprinter vans are great and versatile vehicles. They can be used for just about anything you want– both business and personal. However, as we said above, they’re not without some problems of their own. And here, we’re going to talk about so you can repair a leaking A/C unit.

Step 1: Is It Rain or A/C?

Sometimes the leaking you’ll see is caused by rain; however, 90% of the time it’s because of the A/C Unit. There’s a variety of reasons as to why it could be leaking, but the biggest is because the A/C unit was sealed to the top of the vehicle improperly (with either silicon or other potential sealing agents). So, when the A/C causes condensation, it doesn’t have anywhere to go after it’s been sealed.

Step 2: Tighten It Up…But Not Too Tight

Even though you should leave it to a professional, if you decide to do it yourself, always make sure the rubber gasket sealing the A/C unit to the roof is tight and secured (but not too tight). And always give the A/C unit enough space between it and the roof so that the condensation has somewhere to escape from. Space is important to have because condensation typically drains out from the bottom of the A/C unit (the area between it and the roof). So, because of this, it’s important to not block off the area around it with a sealant.

Step 3: Be Aware Of Clogging

As an owner of a Sprinter van, it’s also important to be conscious of clogged drain pans.
On the pan itself, there’s a small hole for the water to drip from, but occasionally, it can get clogged with debris. Once that happens, water will overflow out from the pan and into your Sprinter van. It’s a bit stressful, but luckily there’s a pretty easy way to fix it. All you have to do is clean out the pan, and the first step to doing that by first turning off the A/C to ensure it doesn’t turn on while you’re cleaning. Secondly, take off the shroud that covers your A/C unit, clear out the gunk, and then change the shroud. Afterward, your leak should be resolved.
