RV Roof Replacement Options

October 21, 2019

Anyone who owns an RV will usually put it to good use to tour the country or just take trips that make the drive more of a pleasure. All of those travels at some point will take a toll on the roof of your vehicle and the eventual diagnosis of a new roof on an RV will be the prospect you’ll be facing.

This type of RV service and repair may be a foreign concept to the owner, simply because the main focus is often on making sure that the vehicle simply runs. Yet there are RV roof replacement options that can address either developing problems or the onset of a major concern that demands such a change.

Below are some options to consider:

Re-Roofing

A rubber roof is the most common sight when it comes to RVs, with the lower cost of repairs and maintenance required serving as the chief reasons for that selection. Yet immunity from such problems isn’t guaranteed, with issues developing from Texas-like problems such as hailstorms or inadvertent contact with branches above the vehicle.

In some cases, the cause can simply focus on the aging process. The typical wear-and-tear an RV sees will eventually have a damaging effect on a roof’s seal, causing it to deteriorate to the point that water begins to come inside. Getting a new roof on an RV quickly becomes a high priority when these circumstances develop.

To make this a reality, the use of a sealant known officially as ethylene propylene diene Monomer, but better known by its EPDM acronym, is usually what’s used when applying a new roof. Of course, removing the original roof comes beforehand, but the end result is a reduced level of noise that eliminates the prospect of water finding its way into the RV. In addition, savings will also come in the energy department, thanks to EPDM’s ability to reflect heat.

Going From Rubber to Fiberglass

Maintenance of a fiberglass roof is even easier than rubber, though the cost is steeper. One subtle benefit that comes with taking the plunge into fiberglass is that gas mileage will improve, thanks to the dual components of less weight and better aerodynamics.

One of the best reasons it pays to leave replacement of an RV roof to the experts is because getting everything perfectly aligned on top is part of a staff’s everyday job. That means drilling in the proper places and proper sealing methods, which offers more assurance that the job will be performed properly, assuming you’ve taken it to a reputable RV service and repair shop.

DIY Possibilities

Despite the potential problems that can result, there are some RV owners who will be scared off by the cost of RV roof replacement options. That results in them taking it upon themselves to try and handle the job on their own. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that approach, but the job itself can serve as a stiff challenge because of all the factors involved.

For one thing, you need to remove the awning and the roof membrane, along with anything else that might be situated in that area. That’s followed by getting rid of the plywood that’s fastened directly below the membrane and then replacing everything and putting it in place before sealing everything up. That exhaustive process can often change the minds of even the most determined RV owners.
