Understanding and Maintaining Proper RV Tire Pressure

Understanding and Maintaining Proper RV Tire Pressure

We all know that our home on wheels is only as good as its foundation – the tires. Proper tire pressure is crucial for safety, fuel efficiency, and the overall longevity of your RV. At Coach Specialists of Texas, we often get asked, “What should my RV tire pressure be?” The answer isn’t as simple as you might think, but don’t worry! We’re here to break it down for you and help you keep your RV rolling smoothly down the open road.

Why Proper Tire Pressure Matters

Before we dive into the specifics, let’s talk about why maintaining the right tire pressure is so important:

Safety First

Incorrect tire pressure can lead to poor handling, increased stopping distances, and even blowouts. Nobody wants to deal with a tire failure while cruising down the highway!  A tire blow out can cause significant damage and result in an insurance claim.  If that does happen, Coach Specialists of Texas is well versed in tire blow out insurance claims.

Fuel Efficiency

Properly inflated tires reduce rolling resistance, which means better fuel economy. Who doesn’t want to save a few bucks at the pump?

Tire Longevity

Over-inflated or under-inflated tires wear unevenly and more quickly. Maintaining the right pressure helps your tires last longer, saving you money in the long run.

Comfort on the Road

The right tire pressure contributes to a smoother, more comfortable ride. Your RV’s suspension will thank you!

Finding the Right Pressure for Your RV Tires

Now, let’s get to the meat of the matter. What should your RV tire pressure be? Here’s how to figure it out:

Check the Sidewall

Your RV tires have a maximum pressure rating stamped on the sidewall. This is NOT necessarily the pressure you should use, but it’s important information to know.

Consult Your RV’s Manual

Your RV manufacturer should provide recommended tire pressures in the owner’s manual. This is a good starting point, but keep in mind that it may not account for your specific load.

Use a Tire Pressure Calculator

Many tire manufacturers offer online calculators where you can input your RV’s weight and axle configuration to get a more precise recommendation.

Consider Your Load

The weight of your RV, including all your gear and passengers, plays a big role in determining the right tire pressure. A fully loaded RV will require higher pressure than an empty one.

Factors That Affect RV Tire Pressure

Several factors can influence the ideal tire pressure for your RV:

Temperature Changes

Tire pressure can fluctuate with temperature changes. For every 10°F change in ambient temperature, tire pressure changes by about 1 PSI.

Altitude

As you climb to higher elevations, the air pressure inside your tires will increase slightly.

Load Distribution

How you distribute weight in your RV can affect the pressure needed in each tire.

Tips for Maintaining Proper RV Tire Pressure

Now that you understand the importance of correct tire pressure and how to determine it, here are some tips to help you maintain it:

Check Pressure Regularly

Make it a habit to check your tire pressure before each trip and at least once a month during storage.

Use a Quality Tire Pressure Gauge

Don’t rely on the built-in pressure sensors in your RV (if equipped). Invest in a good-quality digital tire pressure gauge for accuracy.

Check When Tires Are Cold

Always check and adjust tire pressure when the tires are “cold” – before you’ve driven or at least three hours after parking.

Don’t Forget the Spare

Your spare tire needs love too! Make sure it’s properly inflated in case you need it.

Consider Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS)

A TPMS can alert you to pressure changes in real-time, giving you peace of mind on the road. Coach Specialists of Texas can recommend and install the TPMS system that is right for you.

Adjust for Long-Term Storage

If your RV will be stored for an extended period, consider slightly over-inflating the tires to account for natural pressure loss over time.  Keep in mind that long term storage can result in dry rot and tires should be inspected before leaving storage.  Surprisingly, tires age more quickly if they are not regularly used.  Even if your RV is rarely driven, five to seven years is the average life expectancy.  Low mileage on an RV tire does not equate to longer use.
