Top 10 Tips for Preparing Your RV for Spring Travel

Spring has arrived in Texas, which means it’s time to start getting your RV ready for adventure! After a long winter in storage, your recreational vehicle will need some basic maintenance and safety checks before hitting the open road. At Coach Specialists of Texas, we share our top tips for de-winterizing your rig and ensuring safe spring travel.

1. Check the Batteries

Over the winter months, your RV batteries can lose charge, even if they were disconnected. Inspect the battery cables for corrosion and clean the terminals if needed. Consider replacing old batteries every few years for optimal performance. Fully charge the batteries before your first trip.

2. Air Up the Tires

Tires can lose air pressure over time, so use a quality tire gauge and inflate to the recommended PSI listed on the sidewalls. Don’t forget to check your spare tire too! Look for cracks, bulges or uneven tread wear that could signal it’s time for new tires.

3. Inspect Hoses and Seals

Extreme cold can wreak havoc on rubber plumbing hoses and seals. Carefully check for cracks or deterioration on items like sewage hose gaskets, washing machine hoses, refrigerator ice maker lines and roof seams/sealants. Replace or reseal anything suspect.

4. Change Filters

For peak efficiency and airflow, install fresh air filters in your RV’s A/C unit, refrigerator, water heater and engine air intake. A new filter does wonders for cooling performance!

5. Sanitize Water System

Before using the fresh water system, flush out any anti-freeze with fresh potable water. Then add an RV-safe sanitizing solution to kill bacteria and get fresh smells circulating.

6. Check LP Gas System

If you turned off gas appliances before winter storage, have the system inspected and leak tested by an RV technician. They’ll ensure gas lines are clear, valves work properly and appliances re-light safely.

7. Reseal the Roof

Unless you have a fiberglass or aluminum roof, inspect the RV’s liquid roof coating for cracks or bubbles after freezing temps. Use the recommended products to reseal and prevent water leaks. Consider upgrading to a permanent solution.

8. Test Electric Brakes

For safe towing, test that your RV’s breakaway switch, electric brakes and brake battery connection are in working order after months of non-use. Replace parts as needed and repack the bearings.

9. Review Safety Equipment

Check fire extinguisher pressure levels, test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and restock emergency road kits with fresh supplies and water. Your family’s safety is priority one!

10. Schedule Maintenance

Lastly, have your RV’s engine, generator, AC and other systems inspected by certified RV techs before a long haul. Whether basic service or major repairs, Coach Specialists has you covered for spring travel!
