RV repair in Fort Worth, TX Q&A: What should I do if I hit a guard rail with my motorhome?

Navigating through busy town streets can be tricky in any motorhome, regardless of its size.  That is why one of the most common types of RV repairs we perform at Coach Specialists of Texas in Dallas/Fort Worth is guard rail damage.  Since guard rails are there to prevent our vehicles from swerving further off the road, it’s no surprise that they are privy to a number of accidents every year.  If you have accidentally hit a guard rail with your motorhome, you are probably wondering what you should do next.  To help guide you through the process, here is what we recommend you do:

Review the circumstances that led to your RV accident.
Were you driving through particularly bad weather at the time?  Were the roads very slippery?  Did another vehicle come towards you or slam into you, causing you to hit the guard rail?  Take detailed notes of the circumstances of your accident, since they may be useful if you should decide to file a claim with your RV insurance company.  For some excellent advice on how certain conditions might affect your claim, visit

Examine the damage done to your motorhome and the guard rail, too.
Because motorhomes are often large in nature, they sometimes take very little damage upon colliding with a guard rail.  The guard rail, on the other hand, might be looking much worse for the wear.  Depending on the extent of the damage to your RV and/or the guard rail, you may need to contact the police to file a report.  In the case of damage to your motorhome, you’ll want the police report if you should decide to file an insurance claim.  For the guard rail, you’ll need to come forward and take ownership of the damage your collision caused.  Not everyone is aware of this, but
you are responsible
for the cost of repairs for the damage you cause to public property, like guard rails.

Call your insurance company if you want your repairs covered.
If there is any chance you’ll want your insurance company to cover the cost of your motorhome repairs after hitting a guard rail, be sure to call them right away.  If very little damage was done to your motorhome, though, and you were the only vehicle involved in the collision, then you can certainly choose to cover the cost of repairs on your own in order to avoid a rate increase.
