Tips To Sell Your RV

There are many reasons you may want to sell your RV. Perhaps you want an upgrade, or maybe it’s time to downscale to a smaller model as the kids leave the nest. Whatever it may be, there are a few ways to go about selling your rig. In this post, we share some insider tips and tricks, and a few things to keep in mind when making a sale.

There are two main options to consider when selling your RV:

Consignment
Consignment involves having an RV dealer use their resources to sell your RV for you. This is a great way to list your RV for sale if you are very busy, as it won’t take up a lot of time. Although you will remain the owner until a deal has been made, the dealer will do all the work for you, from handling appointments, marketing, viewings, inquiries, and financing. During the consignment period, you won’t be able to list or market your RV sale elsewhere until the agreed-upon consignment period is over, and you will also need to get insurance for your camper to be on the dealer’s lot.

Of course, the downside is that your profit margin may be slightly less as a percentage of the amount will go to the dealer for the services provided. However, you could consider this time and money well spent.

Private Sale
Making the sale yourself will take a lot more effort on your part. You will need to do all the leg work of the sales listing, including marketing (from choosing where to advertise to writing the copy and taking good photos), appointments and viewings, and following up with potential buyers. All decisions are left to you, from choosing the selling price to who purchases the RV.

The cons include the fact that all this work can be a huge time commitment and comes with possible financial risks. It can also take a long time for the right buyer to come along, and you take on the liability of any problems a new owner might come across.

What You Need To Know About a Private Sale

If you have chosen to go ahead with a private sale, we have a few tips and tricks to help maximize your efforts:

Choose Your Sales Platform: If you think your RV may take a long time to sell, you might want to take out a long-running advertisement. If you want your listing to stand out, consider a higher-priced package that will include many features to make it more attractive than the rest.

Pricing: Pricing can be tricky and is crucial in a successful sale. Take some time to do a survey of the current RV market and how best to determine what a fair price for your camper will be. Take a look at current listings to figure out average selling prices of RVs similar to yours.

Creating the Advertisement: You want your listing to highlight the most important and compelling features of your RV. Take some time to craft well-written copy with ample description. Try and add as much information as possible, as this will help increase potential leads and encourage fewer questions. Points to include: why are you selling, establish how you will accept payment, communicate former maintenance or damage in the RV’s history and any needed repairs, mention modifications, list warranty information, and set your terms on the price.

Include Photos: Photos are essential. It’s your way to give a good impression of your RV and will help a potential buyer decide to view your camper or not. Make sure you have cleaned and polished your RV, and it’s placed in an outdoor setting, preferably on a nice day. Show your RV both inside and out, with special features highlighted.

Add a Video: Even better than photos is the buyer’s ability to be guided through your RV via video. Have someone else video, so you can talk through and highlight all the best features. Remember to practice first, so you have a professional-looking and sounding video.

Visibility: Alongside placing an ad, you will want to park your RV in a high-traffic area to maximize the visibility of the sale. If you don’t live in such a place, consider approaching a friend or small business that may be willing to let you park your RV on their property for a period.

Signage: Put up some ‘For Sale’ signs on your camper where they will be visible and print a spec sheet to be placed alongside the ‘For Sale’ sign. Include all the features of your RV as well as your contact details for potential buyers.
