Top 6 things first-time RV owners in Dallas wish they knew about RV repair

When you buy a new RV, whether fresh off the showroom floor or a new-to-you previously owned vehicle, the last thing you’re probably thinking about is the fact that one day, you are probably going to have to fix a leaking tire, or a cracked windshield, broken refrigerator, or a non-working air conditioner or heating system.

But, just as with cars and homes and other major purchases, issues are inevitable. It’s good to have an idea how you will take care of problems before they come up.

  1. Set aside money so you’re prepared for repairs. Buying an RV is a major investment and, like any investment, you want to protect it. If you own an RV, it’s a good idea to have a repair budget set aside in advance. This money can be used to cover the regular maintenance that will keep your motorhome running smoothly, and will ensure you are prepared to address any major repairs, should they come up. (Examples of major repairs common in these types of vehicles include leaks, failing electrical systems and generators, heating and refrigeration issues, windshield repair, exterior body work, etc.) Some RV repairs are expensive and it’s best to plan ahead so you’re prepared should you need a major fix.
  2. Find a local mechanic you trust. Another way to protect your RV investment is by finding an RV repair shop right here in Dallas that specializes in RV repair and where the mechanics are certified – a place and people you can trust to take the best possible care of your vehicle. Develop a relationship with the mechanics so you can rely on them to perform jobs both large and small.
  3. Preventive maintenance is key. You should routinely inspect your vehicle inside and out on your own. Less frequently – but on a regular basis, particularly if you are getting ready for a big trip, your vehicle hasn’t been driven in awhile, or, conversely, if you’ve been on the road a great deal – it’s a good idea to have a thorough inspection done by a licensed professional to find minor issues before they become major ones.
  4. Read the fine print. If you’re getting parts replaced, check to see if they’re still under warranty. If you have an extended warranty on your vehicle, make sure you understand pre-authorization repair rules in your contract. The pre-authorization is sometimes waived in emergency situations, but it’s a good idea to know ahead of time what qualifies and what does not. You will not want to deal with finding your warranty and going through the fine print when you’ve got an emergency repair situation on your hands.
  5. Don’t get taken advantage of. If you do find you need an emergency, on-the-road repair and you are not able to rely on your usual mechanic or repair technician, don’t pay cash for repairs before they have been completed to your satisfaction. If you are quoted a price that seems exorbitant, scope it out. Don’t authorize the shop to perform the repairs until you’ve called your trusted mechanic in Dallas for a quote and/or done research online.
  6. It should go without saying…. You have every right to expect good customer service from your RV repair service provider. If you don’t get it, take your business elsewhere.
